A camera obscura on ice, for the Art Shanty Projects 2027.
Step inside a room-sized camera, a camera obscura. A mirror and lens gather light from the shanty village around us and cast it onto a central table. Feast your eyes on live scenes – no electronics, no recordings. This continues one of the world’s oldest amusements, seen in pleasure gardens in the 1600s and on Victorian seaside piers, some of which still run. We may be the only one on ice, though. Short talks and tours all day, and we’re always testing new ways to play with light.
